A scaffold is any temporary, elevated work platform and its supporting structure that is used to house people or materials, or both. Scaffolding is used for new construction, renovation, maintenance and repair.
Brackets are divided into three basic types:
1. Supported scaffolding consisting of one or more platforms supported by rigid load-bearing members such as rods, legs, frames and protruding supports.
2. Suspended scaffolding, one or more platforms suspended by ropes or other non-rigid overhead supports.
3. Other scaffolds, mainly human lifts, personnel lifts, etc. These are sometimes thought of as vehicles or machinery, but can be thought of as another type of supporting scaffolding.
