Invented in 1969, Type I joists are engineered wood products that have high strength relative to their size and weight. The most significant difference from size wood is that I-joists use less wood to carry heavy loads than size solid wood joists. [1] As of 2005, approximately 50% of light wood flooring uses I-beams. [2] I-joists are designed to help eliminate the typical problems associated with using solid wood as joists. The advantage of I-joists is that they are less likely to bend, crown, twist, cup, check, or split like a piece of dimensional wood. The dimensional stability of the I joists and little or no shrinkage help eliminate creaking floors. The disadvantage is that the structure quickly fails when directly exposed to fire, reducing the time for residents to escape and increasing the danger to firefighters.
