Plywood is an engineered lumber product made from thin layers of wood veneer bonded together to create a strong and durable composite material. Plywood is available in a variety of different species, sizes, and specifications to suit a range of different applications including interior and exterior wall sheathing, structural bracing, floor and roof decking, and furniture making.

Typically, plywood is made from hardwood, softwood, or tropical varieties. Softwood plywood typically uses species like Pine, Spruce, and Douglas Fir, while species like White Oak, Red Oak, and Maple are commonly used in hardwood varieties. Plywood is available in sizes ranging from 4’ x 8’ sheets up to large 10’ x 48’ varieties.

Plywood is used for a variety of construction and furniture building applications. The typical thickness for plywood sheet goods is 1/4”, 1/2”, 5/8”, and 3/4” thickness but nominal thickness can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Plywood can also be used in conjunction with other materials to create custom thicknesses, as well as special waterproof varieties that are suitable for contact with water or humid environments.

Exterior plywood is ideal for building structures such as sheds and decks, while interior plywood is commonly used in furniture making and partition walls. Sycamore and softwood plywood sheets are often used to create cabinets and skins for musical instruments. It is also the best material to use when creating drawer box or carcass designs while creating custom furniture. It's light weight, relatively inexpensive, and can be spray painted, stained, or laminated to finish.

There are endless uses for plywood, from as simple as shelving, to as complex as aircraft fuselages. Plywood is a versatile material that can be used for both interior and exterior applications and its availability in a variety of sizes and specifications makes it suitable for a broad range of projects.
